Welcome
This site is dedicated to the ongoing AVRaL project for the period of August 2007 until July 2009. The name AVRaL is an acronym for Autonomous Vehicle for Recruitment and Learning. Our objective is to design, implement, test, and deliver an autonomous robotic vehicle whose function is to give tours to visitors of the planned Science and Technology building at the University of West Florida. This project encompasses Phase 1 of such a vehicle, providing a mobile base with power distribution system, motor drive system, sensors for line tracking, and onboard and remote network interfaces.
The Requirements
The requirements of the completed system are as follows:
· Chassis of sufficient strength to accommodate a total loaded weight of 100 pounds.
· Sufficient self-contained power supply (battery) capacity to power the robot for a
minimum of 1 hour.
· Modular power supply and distribution system to allow regulation of battery voltage
down to standard voltages including 12V, 5V, and 3.3V. The power distribution
system shall also include voltage monitoring and fusing to prevent damage to
components.
· Motor drive allowing forward motivation at typical human walking speed (5 mph),
reverse direction capability, and in-place turning (zero turn radius).
· Ability to navigate in the building using floor surface feature recognition; i.e. line
tracking using identification of floor tile color.
· A hardware kill switch in case of undesired robot behavior.
· Use of standard interface protocols, in hardware and software, including Ethernet,
serial, and UDP.
· Modular, expandable, and well documented design of all hardware and software to
facilitate feature addition and maintenance. A complete software application
programming interface (API) shall be delivered to allow higher level software to
interface with sensors and motor control
· Use of common components with other robotics teams to facilitate maintainability
