Welcome

The University of West Florida Unmanned Aerial Systems-UAS Phoenix Project
Project began with Katerina Pugh's desire to make a UAS aircraft to survey hurricane aftermath. Since it was weeks before she could find out the condition of her home after hurricane Ivan, she decided to apply her education to a practical application. After sharing her idea with Mr. Algeo, he decided to participate and help her with this project. Project V'ger was actually started by Katerina and Mr. Algeo in November 2006, even though it was not initially a part of the UWF robotics program.

Dr. Manseur, the head of the UWF Robotics Lab at the time, was ready to support the project and also wanted to see a UWF team place in the AUVSI UAS competition held in June 2007. In February 2007, Project V'ger became a part of the UWF robotics and set a goal to place in the top 10 at the competition. The old Phoenix airframe (2006) underwent extensive modifications and the project took the name Phoenix II. The work that needed to be completed for the June 2007 competition seemed almost a "Mission Impossible"; however, the Phoenix II aircraft performed well and the team placed near its goal.

To read the complete history of the project, see the Phoenix and Phoenix II at http://robotics.ece.uwf.edu/pastprojects.html.

This site is dedicated to the ongoing Phoenix project for the period of July 2007 until July 2008.
